Michael van Gerwen tasted glory in Munich on Sunday evening as he picked up the German Darts Grand Prix title and the £25,000 prize. For Van Gerwen it was his eighth PDC ranking title in 2018, and his 22nd Euro Tour title win.
Just like last weekend’s final in Leverkusen, Van Gerwen faced a familiar opponent in the World no.2 Peter Wright. The Green machine swept aside Snakebite in a 8-5 victory, Wright did pile in a superb 161 finish along the way, but Van Gerwen proved to be too strong for Wright.
In the Semi-Finals, the World no.1 proved to be too much for Daryl Gurney, the Northern Ireland ace struggled to get out of the blocks early on, and MVG wasn’t in a forgiving mood as he raced into a 4-0 lead, from then on it was an uphill task for Superchin. Van Gerwen ended the match with a stunning 149 finish to send Gurney home.
As for Wright, he overcame an on-song James Wade in a 7-3 victory. It’s the second time in a week that Snakebite’s had the better of the Machine, and it was a decent display from Wright as he averaged 100.1, but it was the finishing that proved to be the key element as Wright hit 46.67% of his doubles attempted compared to Wade’s 27.27%. Wade did pile in a majestic 170 finish to get the scoreline back to 4-3, but Snakebite got the job done in the end.
