Max Hopp etched his name into the history books as he becomes the first German player to win a PDC European Tour event. The ‘Maximiser’ blew away a whole host of top seeds en route to clinching the title.
Hopp enjoyed victories over the likes of Zoran Lerchbacher, Peter Wright, Benito van de Pas, Joe Cullen, Rob Cross & Michael Smith on his way to achieving his dream.
The 21-year old German reversed a 4-1 deficit in a great final with Michael Smith as he won a last-leg thriller as he piled in a stunning 121 on the bullseye to send the Saarbrücken faithful wild.
In the Semi-Final, Hopp managed to see off the no.3 seed Rob Cross in another last-leg decider, and amazingly the German pulled out the very same 121 finish on the bullseye to edge past the World Champion.
Hopp’s been in some sensational form recently, and with this superb victory It’s propelled him into a potential spot in the World Matchplay in July.
Earlier on in the day, Ian White dismantled the World no.1 Michael van Gerwen in a 6-2 victory for the ‘Diamond’ and, coincidentally White defeated Van Gerwen in the very same event just 12 months previously by a 6-1 scoreline.
But, White was seen off by a resurgent Michael Smith, who produced quite a display as he averaged 107 in what was a 7-1 victory for the ‘Bully Boy’.
