What You Need to Know About Dart Flights
Selecting the right flight is key to controlling your darts in the air. Everyone needs a little time to experiment with different flight shapes to get the ideal combination of barrel, shaft and flight for their unique grip and release. To help you find your winning setup, here are the questions we commonly get asked about Harrows flights.
Do dart flights make a difference?
Absolutely! The shape and surface area of your flight impacts how your dart flies in the air. Larger flights, such as standard flights, offer more drag and lift to stabilise the dart, and are ideal for beginners. Whereas smaller dart flight shapes cut through the air faster, and are more suitable for players with a harder throw and more direct release.
What dart flights are best?
The best flights are those that complement your chosen barrel weight, grip, and throwing style. If you haven’t yet found your ultimate combination, start by experimenting with flight shapes; it’s a low-cost way to switch up your game. Whilst standard shapes are very popular for stability, many professionals experiment with kite or slim profiles to achieve tighter grouping in the treble 20 bed.
How to put flights on darts
To attach a standard flight, gently fan out the four wings until they form perfect 90-degree angles. Then, align the base of the flight with the pre-cut slots in the shaft and carefully slide the flight in until it is secure. To maintain 90-degree angles, and protect your flights from damage during tight groupings on the board, we recommend using flight protectors, which slot easily over the end of the flight.
How to stop darts flights coming off
It’s always good practice to ensure your flights are firmly pushed into the slots of your shafts before you throw, but if you find they frequently come off, particularly during tighter groupings, you can use a flight punch and shaft ring to clamp them firmly in the stems. Alternatively, you may like to try integrated flights, which combine the flight and shaft into a single, durable piece to eliminate the risk of separation.
