The majority of premium tungsten darts feature a universal thread, which allows dart stems to be screwed into any compatible barrel. This enables you to easily swap and replace stems, to tweak balance, speed and entry angle to suit your style of grip and release.

Professional players use a variety of dart stem sizes to suit their individual grip and chosen barrel profile. Many elite players favour short or midi shafts as these compact lengths enable them to get tighter groupings in the treble beds without flights obstructing incoming darts.

It’s surprising how much shaft length affects the overall dart. For example, shorter shafts move the centre of gravity closer to the front of the barrel, which suits players with a heavier, more direct throw. Medium and longer shafts, on the other hand, give more drag and lift, correcting any wobbles and suiting a smoother release.

If you want to experiment with different dart stem sizes, you’ll first need to know how to measure them. The shaft is measured in millimetres, from the base of the stem, where it sits flush against the barrel, to the top where the flight is inserted. When measuring shaft length, don’t include the threaded section as this will be hidden inside the barrel once assembled.
